Rupe's Report

What a strange game with Tulane!—Full of mysteries. The first was why was Navy playing so poorly, especially after a bye week and they were so highly favored? The answer turned out to be that when Tulane twice played Georgia State (who uses the same triple option offense that Navy does), Tulane used the same defensive game plan in both games. So, it stood to reason that they would use it against Navy as well, at least that was the assumption. So, Navy reviewed the films and practiced against it all week. Surprise! Surprise! Tulane came in with a totally different defensive game plan and navy had to struggle  for nearly the whole first half trying to adjust to it. Nevertheless, no matter how ugly, a win is a win. And, Navy received 15 first place votes in the Today/Coaches Poll—up six from last week. The second mystery was that we in Section 129 detected across the field a yellow Class of ‘58 flag lashed to a railing outside of the the upper level of suites, above the midshipmen. Who was it? And, what is the chance of being invited up there to join him?

Our Tulane tailgate turnout was larger than expected and included about 20 ‘08ers. The melding of our Great Eight Classes (’58 and ‘08) Tailgate continues to grow and strengthen and we learn as we progress. We have tried two plans and they both seemed to work well—If ‘08 has a large group, they remain and continue to party at the site after ‘58 has departed. They store away any tables and chairs after they have finished and return Sunday morning to strike the tent. If it is a small group, we strike the tailgate site and ‘08 shifts over to Mo’s house which is nearby. For the Tulane game, we used a third plan—the Cadets took away all except the tent, tables and chairs and departed. The mixed tailgate went on for another two hours. Finally, when we were reduced to a “quorum” of about a dozen ‘58, ‘08, and guests, we drafted everybody and struck everything with the ad hoc group.

Navy is now one win away from Bowl Eligibility and Keenan is just three touchdowns from a career record of most ever recorded. You have got to watch this one.
